Summary
Existing soil and bedrock maps allow for limited and very generalized evaluation of geotechnical properties, reactions and behaviour.
A preliminary study has been carried out to investigate the possibilities of establishing a Swedish geotechnical terrain classification system, the purpose of which is to imporve geotechnical information for physical planning. A proposal for principles based on Australian and American terrain classification principles is presented. The classification is based on existing geotechnical data, geological, topographical, hydrological and other factors.
The classification system is hierarchically constructed so it can be used for the different levels of planning. To test the possibilities and to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed system a test has been carried out. The preliminary study will be followed by development work.
