Summary

The general aspects of the widely distributed loessic soils of China are presented. Attention was centred on the collapsible soils of the new and upper strate of the entire loessic series of the Quaternary, and a general trend of gradual changes in soil properties and corresponding diminution in aptitude to collapse on wetting in the northwest to southeast direction was depicted. In view of this trend and the actual discrepancies existing among loessic soils of different regions, an attempt toward a preliminary zoning of loessic soils was embarked upon, and as an outcome of this effort, seven zones were found distinct and shown on a schematic map of zoning, together with a brief description of each of these zones given in the test and corresponding tables.

At the end of this paper was annexed an appendix on the methods of evaluation of collapsibility of loessic soils which are currently in practice in China.
