Summary

This paper investigates the mechanical properties of the concretionary laterites from the rain forest and the savannah zones of Nigeria. It then compares these properties to those of crushed granitic gravel and hardened ferruginous laterite conglomerate. The results show that these concretionary laterites have superior properties to the crushed granitic gravel used in this investigation. The hardened ferruginous laterite conglomerate had the worst properties for road construction. The excellent properties of these concretionary laterites are used to explain the longevity of the earlier roads constructed in Ondo State of Nigeria for light to medium dense traffic.
