Summary

Some results of engineering and seismological investigations carried out on construction sites of the Chadak, Chartak, and Charvak reservoirs are reported. It is now known that the major factors responsible for seismic effects in construction areas of reservoirs on hard rock are structural deformations, the trend and geology of tectonic structures, pattern of folding and bedding, fissuring and karst topography. As far as the areas with widely distributed friable and poorly consolidated rock are concerned, relief, composition, conditions and level of underground waters are accordingly important.

It has been determined from the results of research on the regimen of reservoir water filling and the area's seismic activity that water filling and operation conditions of a reservoir affect the display of seismicity in the zone.

There is a most close relationship between the gradient of the rate of change of water level and seismic activity in the region.
