Summary
A 8.55 km long tunnel is under construction for the Maneri-Bhali Hydro-Project, Stage I to utilise the waters of the Bhagirathi river for 93 MW of power generation in the Uttarkashi district of India. The entire area lies in geologically complex Himalayan terrain. The adverse geology with complex structures has posed the problem of choice of tunnel alignment. The surface geological features coupled with subsurface explorations and geophysical survey have been utilised to portray and predict geotechnical problems at the tunnel grade. Geotechnical investigations have helped in selecting the lest problematic alignment. The presence of a water-saturated synclinal structure which the tunnel will negotiate and other tectonic features which may require special tunnelling techniques and/or treatment are predicted during the planning stage geological investigation. The geotechnical aspects, which favoured the final alignment and possible tunnelling hazards have been elucidated in this paper.
