Hyperalimentation in the management of chronic inflammatory intestinal disease

Conclusion

Sixteen patients who had advanced chronic inflammatory disease of the bowel were treated with hyperalimentation to 1) restore and improve nutrition, and 2) provide bowel rest. An average weight gain of 9 pounds was recorded for this group of patients even though nine of the 16 had 14 surgical procedures performed during the study. One patient in the study developedCandida albicans septicemia and subsequently died.

A standard hyperalimentation formula, delivery system, and patient monitoring method have been utilized effectively in this study to achieve the maximum nutritional benefits with minimal hazards to patient welfare.
