Internal anal sphincterectomy in the correction of anal contracture

  • Published:
Diseases of the Colon & Rectum

Conclusion

One hundred and four cases of contracture of the anal outlet treated by dissection and excision of the posterior quadrant of the internal sphincter are described. The mucocutaneous lining of the anal canal was preserved where possible. The procedure is relatively simple and has a sound pathologic anatomic basis. Satisfactory caliber and functional mobility were restored to the anal canal in 98 per cent of cases.
