Abstract

The technique of forward light scattering, rather than light obscuration, is employed in a smoke detection system that has been used successfully, particularly in merchant and passenger vessels. The author explains the physical principles of light scattering and how the Tyndall Effect is applied to advantage in detector units incorporating both visual and photoelectrical observation of the areas they protect.
