Conclusions
On the basis of results in 50 patients undergoing intestinal anastomoses in which monofilament polypropylene suture was used in interrupted single-layer sutures, it is concluded that this suture material is as good as or better than monofilament surgical steel, and that the method is superior to any two-layer technique thus far reported. Abdominal wound closures with polypropylene suture shown excellent immediate results. However, enough time has not elapsed to evaluate fully the incidence of incisional hernias. Incistional pain, both immediate and delayed, was much less when polypropylene suture was used.
