Summary
This paper deals with a bar (called “oscillator”), clamped in a finite or infinite body (called “support”) and excited to vibrations. The loss of kinetic energy of the oscillator has been divided into three kinds, i.e.—
-
(a)
“inner damping” described by a suitable generalization ofHooke's law,
-
(b)
“outer damping”, due to frictional forces acting at the free surface of the oscillator, and
-
(c)
“damping by radiation” caused by the elastic waves, radiating from the surface of contact between the oscillator and the support and travelling through the latter.
As examples of supports, a semi-infinite bar and the infinite-elastic space been treated. As examples of vibrations, forced harmonic longitudinal, transverse and torsional vibrations of the bar have been considered.
