Abstract
The first sound velocity and attenuation in metastable long-lived superfluid3He−4He mixtures are measured in a temperature range of 30 to 200 mK. The metastable state is reached by increasing continuously the3He concentration during the experiment due to change of the osmotic pressure. The concentration of the mixture is determined by simultaneous measuring the dielectric constant. The first sound is shown to undergo an excess attenuation in the metastable region while the sound velocity does not display any anomalous behaviour in this region. The results for stable mixtures are in good agreement with the kinetic theory but there is no quantitative explanation of the excess attenuation in the metastable solutions.
