Abstract
After a short description of the function and history of the hydraulic ram a simplified theory is developed from Newton's equations of motion, taking into account loss factors and boundary conditions. Results from this theory are compared with measurements made on a laboratory model; in particular, the time dependence of the flow velocity in the drive pipe, the water volume delivered per work cycle and the efficiency were experimentally determined as functions of various parameters. The agreement is good. It is expected that the proposed theory will be useful for the practical design of hydraulic rams.
