Abstract
A recent literature search has shown that there is a need for a common categorisation of types of management support systems (MSS)-for researchers, practitioners, and teachers. The theme throughout the classification is that the important differentiators of systems should be those that reflect the behavioural and organisational aspects of system specification, development, implementation, and use. This paper contains a proposal for a nine-dimensional classification: cognitive, information engineering, knowledge type and source, knowledge engineering, organizational, political, process, support, and technological. Both individual and group MSS are considered. Previous classifications of MSS are reviewed.
