Use of Angelchik Anti-Reflux Prosthesis for repair of total rectal prolapse in elderly patients

Abstract

A modification of the technique suggested by Hopkinson for the repair of rectal prolapse via the perineal route is described. This technique involves the use of an Angelchik Anti-Reflux ProsthesisTM and is particularly suitable for elderly patients in whom abdominal rectopexy would be hazardous because of general health.

Read at the Joint Meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons with the Section of Colo-Proctology, Royal Society of Medicine, and the Section of Colonic and Rectal Surgery, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, New Orleans, Louisiana, May 6 to 11, 1984.

Since its reading at the Joint Meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, three more patients have been added to this series. All three patients are female and are doing well following the described procedure.
