Abstract

We consider the properties of liquid helium at pressures less than the saturated vapor pressure, discuss estimates of the location of the liquid-gas spinodal in the phase diagram, and review a number of experimental studies of the nucleation of bubbles.

  11. When the phonons make the major contribution to the thermodynamics this calculation has to be performed using a self-consistent method. This is because the phonon part of the dispersion curve depends on the sound velocity, and the sound velocity in turn depends on the dispersion curve through Eq. 2.

  12. I am grateful to E. Brezin for this suggestion. It is necessary to consider the extent to which the contribution from this type of excitation is independent of, and additive to, the contribution from the phonon excitations.

  13. To get the correct answer forT λ by this method it is necessary to allow for the temperature-dependence of the dispersion curve.

  30. Note that it is necessary to apply a correction to the data to take account of the attenuation of the sound wave as it travels from the transducer to the focus. The attenuation has a maximum value at around 0.8 K. The data shown in Figs. 4 and 5 are not corrected for this effect. This is why the voltage required to produce cavitation at 0.75 K is greater than the voltage at 0.171 K.
