Abstract

Using histological and histochemical methods the changes within the distal epiphysis of the tibia and the calcanear epiphysis were investigated in normal and aminoacetonitrile-fed lathyritic rats during the period in which closure normally occurs. Only in the normal rats were these epiphyseal plates entirely replaced by bone in time. In the lathyritic animals, endochondral bone formation was reduced and the closure of the epiphyses failed to occur or was delayed. However, similar changes in the composition of polysaccharides were observed in the epiphyseal cartilage of both the normal and the lathyritic rats, which have been considered until now as specific only in experimental lathyrism.
