Summary
The analysis of an Upper Jurassic (Middle Kimmeridgian) massive buildup shows that it is composed of three individual algal-sponge-bioherms, one directly situated above the other. Each individual bioherm may be devided into three characteristic units by means of microfacies analysis. The base of the bioherm consists of a packstone/grainstone or stromatolitic bindstone. The center is made up of fossiliferous and algalpeloid-bearing wackestone or floatstones with algal crusts. Occasionally the organisms may have formed a framework (framestone). At the top of the cycle, pellet wackestones are developed, sometimes bound by stromatolitic layers. Cementation features, which demonstrate an early lithification, can be found mainly at the base and in the center of the bioherm. Isopacheous crusts of bladed calcite crystals, thought to have formerly consisted of high-magnesia calcite, are diagnostic for cements formed in the marine phreatic diagenetic environment. They were overprinted during a successive stage of freshwater diagenesis. Pendant cements indicate early stages of freshwater vadose environments. Vadose crystal silt in molds as well as dedolomitization features verify near-surface conditions during the time of carbonate formation.
Based upon the microfacies and diagenetic characteristics described in this paper, we believe that the algal-sponge-bioherms of the Middle Kimmeridgian formed in a shallow marine environment under conditions of repeated intermittent subaerial exposure.
