Summary
The paleoenvironmental conditions of the uppermost part of the LateCretaceous (Upper Santonian to Upper Campanian) of the Metelen well (NW-Germany, Münsterland Basin) are reconstructed using lithological and faunistic data. The interpretation pays attention to the complete fauna but concentrates on the dominating foraminifers. Temperature interpretation is based predominantly on actualistic comparisons of the taxa, while the estimation of water depth is derived from microfacies, faunal trends and functional morphological adaptions. The models ofStehli (1966),van Marle (1987) undGibson (1989) are used for a quantitative interpretation of water depth based on distributional patterns of foraminifers. The palecological value of all the parameters and models is discussed.
Shallow water deposits, the “foramol-associations”, the Mg-poor, glaukonitic limestones and the position of the well within theNormapolles-province indicate a temperate climate for the Late Campanian of the Metelen section.
The decrease in the abundance of planktonic foraminifera from the lower to the upper part of the section refers to a cooling from the Early Campanian (warm-temperate) to the Late Campanian (cool-temperate). This development corresponds to a global climatic trend, which overprints temperature cycles of fourth to sixth order in the Metelen section. In Early Campanian deposits of the deeper sublitoral the oszillations of the temperature index curve of the benthic foraminifers mainly reflects hydrographically controlled changes of the water temperature. The fluctuations of the curve are mostly within the limits of temperate temperature values. Carbonate cycles of fifth and sixth order exhibit a good agreement with the changes of the temperature index curve. Bathymetrical cycles show the optimal correspondence with carbonate cycles of fourth and sixth order. Differences in the temperature indications derived from planktonic and benthonic foraminifers point to the existence of periods with more or less significant water stratification. Warm water periods with low vertical temperature gradients and migrations of thermophile Tethyan taxa occurred predominantly during the early Lower Campanian. These periods alternate with periods with a distinct water stratification, most probably caused by upwelling. Thermophobe taxa dominate in planktonic and benthonic faunas during the maximum intensity of upwelling duringthe latest Lower Campanian. During the upwelling periods meso- and bathypelagial sela-chians can be observed. The cold water periods can be explained by arctic deep sea water passing through the North Sea rifting system and entering the central European shelf.
Shallow water deposits, an environment close below the storm wave basis and a water depth of 20–40 m can be deduced from ecobathymetrical parameters and faunal trends for the Late Campanian.
The water depth of the deeper shelf can be estimated using foraminiferal assemblages and the the model ofvan Marle as well as the triangular plot method introduced byStehli. The bathymetrical trend curve resulting from these methods exhibits the existence of second(?) to sixth order cycles. Within each cycle lowstand, transgressive and highstand deposits occur; the cycles are bordered by marine flood plains.
The cycles of fourth and sixth order (=parasequences) are interpreted as short-time sea level changes. The good agreement of these cycles with the temperature cycles indicates a glacio-eustatic origin. Slight differences in the boundaries of these cycles may be due to regional tectonic events.
In the Metelen section five sequences (=cycles of third order) can be recognized; they are separated by type II-boundaries and start with sediments of the shelf margin system tract. The transgressive surface, the maximum stage of flooding and condensation horizons are more useful markers for the sequence correlation than the sequence boundaries. The correlation of the third order cycles with the temperature curve is poor; third-oder cycles, therefore, seem to have been predominantly controlled by tectono-eustatic sea level changes.
The correlation of cycles recognized in the Metelen section with the global sea-level cycles (Haq et al. 1988) results in considerable shiftings of the Santonian/Campanian and Lower/Upper Campanian boundaries in the Münsterland Basin in comparison with biostratigraphic boundaries based on benthic foraminifera.
The third-order cycles are overprinted by a cycle of higher order, which must be located between second-order and third-order cycles following the cycle hierarchy. This cycle, probably, seems to be of global importance.
The differentiation of biofacies types is based on a combined cluster and discriminant analysis:
The benthic assemblages can be attributed to seven biofacies-types distinguished by lithological and faunistic parameters. These parameters have been used for a paleocological interpretation of the biofacies types and for a reconstruction of water depth, temperature, limits of light, intensity of currents, accumulation rates and the level of oxygenation of the bottom water. The vertical sequence of biofacies-types reflects the palecological development within the bottom water and the major trends of the cycles.
The faunas of planktonic foraminifers are attributed to four biofacies types. The low-diverse faunas of biofacies I and II were adapted to ecological stress situations. They were common during the early Lower Campanian and the Late Campanian. The cool-water biofacies type III was strongly influenced by upwelling, it is represented predominantly by sediments of upper Early Campanian age. The warm-water biofacies type IV of the lower Early Campanian is characterized by oceanic diverse faunas.
