Summary
Based on the foraminiferal faunas the sequence of the Metelen 1001 well is biostratigraphically subdivided. The faunistic development corresponds with the results ofHiltermann & Koch (1962).
The upper part of the section is stratigraphically identified as the lower part of the Upper Campanian. The boundary of the upper Lower Campanian is characterized by the abruptly starting dominance ofStensioeina exsculpta gracilis. The top of the Lower Campanian is defined by the appearance ofBolivinoides strigillatus. The definition of the Santonian/Campanian boundary is complicated by the fact that most of the species of the fauna, exceptNeoflabellina rugosa, are known from the Upper Santonian as well als from the Lowermost Campanian. Species which are restricted to the Upper Santonian or the Lower Campanian were not observed. The decrease in abundance ofBolivinoides strigillatus at the Santonian/Campanian boundary, known also from other sections, cannot be proved in the Metelen well. Therefore the Santonian/Campanian boundary is placed at the last occurrence ofNeoflabellina rugosa.
The comparison of the Metelen well with the Donar 1, Donar 5 wells and Münsterland 1 shows an extensive agreement of the stratigraphical sequences although there are different criteria für the definition of the boundaries caused by changing fauna compositions. These differences do not contradict the stratigraphical distribution of the foraminifers described byHiltermann & Koch (1962). Contrary to the Metelen 1001 wellStensioeina exsculpta gracilis cannot be observed in the upper part of the Münsterland 1 section. Therefore the top of Münsterland 1 sequence seems to expose a higher part of the lower Upper Campanian than the Metelen 1001 section.
In all the sections the definition of the Santonian/Campanian boundary is very difficult as index fossils für both formations cannot be observed. Therefore a transition bed is differentiated at the Donar wells.
The thickness of the sediments of the upper Lower Campanian is much higher in the western part of the basin (Metelen 1001 well and Münsterland 1 well) than in the eastern part (Donar wells).
In different profiles of the southeastern Münsterland the faunas of the ‘Bottroper Mergel’ show a mixing of Upper Santonian and Lower Campanian species. This can be explained by turbidity currents.
