Diagenesemuster-Stratigraphie: Oolith-Horizonte im Jura von SW-Slowenien

Diagenetic pattern stratigraphy: Jurassic oolite horizons of southwestern Slovenia

Summary

Shallow-water carbonate rocks of Jurassic age are well exposed about 45 km SSE of Ljubljana in the Mala Gora Mountains of Southern Slovenia. The thickness of the sequence is about 1500 m. Oolitic carbonate rocks occur in the Upper Lias (22.5 m thick), Dogger (8 m), Lower Malm (267.5 m), and Upper Malm (56 m).

The stratigraphic relationship of these carbonates was established using microfossils and lithologic comparison. They exhibit pronounced variabilities in facies and diagenetic characteristics which are also supported by geochemical data. The four oolitic units represent only slightly different environments of deposition, but it is the diagenetic development of cement types which serves as a principal distinguishing factor. Different types of cements are of diagnostic value for distinct stratigraphic levels. The correlation of carbonate units, poor in fossils and of uniform facies, might become easier by using diagenetic patterns, varying during geological time.
