Summary

During the Antarctic expeditions ANT I–IV with FS POLARSTERN a programm of sampling was carried out at specific locations in order to get samples from undisturbed parts of the continental slope in the eastern part of the Weddell Sea. Sediment cores from 12 locations along two profiles off kapp Norvegia and off Atka Bay were sedimentologically and stratigraphically analysed. The sediments are up to 1 mio. years old. The sedimentologic parameters allow a classification of different facies of the slope sediments, which can be related to different depositional environments and conditions. It is possible to correlate theses facies stratigraphically with Pleistocene climatic cycles so that specific sedimentation conditions during climatic periods can be reconstructed.
