Conclusions
-
1.
An apparatus and procedures have been developed, enabling us to obtain the complete “stress-strain” diagrams, including the limiting field for extremely brittle rocks during variations in the relative deformation velocities in the range from 10−8 to 10−1 sec−1.
-
2.
Four varieties of rocks have been tested under conditions of uniaxial compression and we have established the absence of any influence of velocity on the values of Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio in the range studied. It has been shown that as the velocity rises, the limit of strength increases and the magnitude of the plastic deformation increases at the limit of strength.
-
3.
The decay modulus of the limiting branch of the curves falls with increase in velocity.
-
4.
The brittleness of the rock examined falls with increase in velocity, and disintegration is of a more viscous nature.
