Summary
The month of January 1983 was an exceptional period in which the conditions of the entire northern hemisphere were greatly perturbed. In this paper, a number of one-month forecasts were attempted to try to capture the effect of the Pacific Sea surface temperature (SST) on the circulation of the northern hemisphere. The experiments were made with a global, primitive equation, low-resolution model (spectral rhomboidal R15, 9 vertical levels) employing simple physics and a global, grid-point, primitive equation, high-resolution model (N48), equipped with an advanced physical parametrization of convection, the Arakawa-Schubert scheme. The results show that the forecasts are sensitive to the details of the SST distribution, but an improvement of the forecast scores can be obtained only by an artificial modification of the SST field. This is an indication that the analysis method of the SST must be improved to adequately represent the balance between the SST and the initial condition.
