Abstract
The orientations of the noncrystallographic macroshear band due to different directions of plane strain in Al-3% Cu single fcc crystals correspond to the orientations of slightly distorted (or invariant) planes of the strain field created by an ensemble of straight dislocations along the <110> or <211> directions. The band forms when the critical condition for cleavage stress is satisfied.
