Allowance for the index of refraction in air during transmission of the unit of length—the meter—in the long wave region

Abstract

We show that for transmission of the unit of length—the meter—we must allow for the index of refraction of air. We present a mechanical solution for determination of the integral index of refraction by using the Faraday effect in the Earth's magnetic field.
