Zusammenfassung
-
1.
Summary
-
(1)
An outline of the theoretical and practical fundamental facts which have to be considered in experiments on fish toxicology is given, followed by the definitions necessarily involved in the estimation of the toxic effect as a function of the concentration of a poisonous solution.
-
(2)
We could establish a steady relation between the concentration of free amtionia in water and the degree of toxicity of this solution at 14°C and oxygen saturamon for adultSqualius cephalus and fry (30 days old) of rainbow trout,Trutta iridea. As the concentration of free ammonia in a solution of an ammonia salt depends on its dissociation, the toxicity of such a solution is determined by itsp H and the concentration of the ammonia salt applied. Molecular ammonia is much more toxic than NH4-ions.
-
(3)
The same relations could be found for the toxicity of cyanid solutions, i. e. hydrocyanic acid (experiments withSqualius cephalus). It can be shown that molecular hydrocyanic acid acts more toxic than cyanid ions.
-
(4)
In mixed solutions, containing both free ammonia and hydrocyanic acid, a striking synergism of the two toxic compounds can be demonstrated.
-
(5)
In a comparative study with different species of fish,Squalius cephalus proved to be the less sensitive and highly resistant one. On the other hand, trout fry was found to be very sensitive to the same toxic compounds. It is believed that our experiments withSqualius and trout fry thus enclose approximately the range of the toxic concentrations of ammonia and hydrocyanic acid for a large number of Swiss fish species.
-
(6)
As far as the mechanism of the intoxications is concerned, the toxicity of the solutions applied seems to be strictly correlated with the permeability of the gills for the toxic molecules and ions.
