Summary

  1. 1.

The stabilities of slopes composed of isotropic clays can be calculated from the strength characteristics determined in a single-plane shear apparatus.

  2. 2.

The stabilities of slopes composed of anisotropic clays (coarse-platy clays) must be calculated from the strength characteristics determined in single-plane shear apparatuses or stabilometers, because in the upper part the glide surface runs at an angle to the natural bedding of the rock (disintegration conditions of the specimen in the stabilometer), but, in the lower part, it coincides with it (disintegration conditions in a single-plane shear apparatus).
