Summary

The work is an overview of the methodology of investigation of volatile compounds evolved from plastics by headspace analysis. Polystyrene plastics and Chemosil lacquer were tested. The investigations were conducted at different temperatures and at different ratios of the surface area of the tested materials to the gas phase volume. Styrene, ethylbenzene and n-butyl alcohol were determined. Results of the calculations are listed in the tables and shown in the figures. On the basis of a mass balance the surface concentrations of the tested substances and their distribution coefficients between the solid and gas phases were also determined. The agreement between measured and calculated concentrations of the tested substances was very good.
