Further survey of the pyrenoid distribution in Japanese brown algae

Abstract

A further survey of pyrenoid distribution in the brown algae was made with the electron microscope. Of the 34 species observed, pyrenoids were detected in only 15. InSphacelaria, a genus in which the chloroplasts of vegetative cells were believed to be lacking pyrenoids, poorly developed pyrenoids are reported for the first time. This is of special interest in regard to the phyletic importance of pyrenoids in the systematics and phylogeny of brown algae.
