Summary
Introducing the concept of a generalized selfadjointness, it is possible to extend the notion of a conservative system to classically nonconservative systems. Depending on the nature of a certain functional that replaces the classical energy functional, the truly nonconservative systems become conservative systems of the second kind (if the functional is quadratic) and conservative systems of the third kind (if the functional is bilinear). The generalized selfadjointness can be viewed as an operation making the system concerned symmetrical in a general sense. The generalized selfadjointness also makes it possible to extend Hamilton's variational principle to nonconservative systems. Thus, one is able to use a Rayleigh-Ritz approximation to determine the eigenvalues of these nonconservative systems. Examples of conservative systems of the second kind have been given by the author in an earlier paper. In this paper, Beck's rod is introduced as an example for conservative systems of the third kind.
