Activation and inactivation of the miracidia ofSchistosoma mansoni within the egg-shell

  • Published:
Zeitschrift für Parasitenkunde Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The activation ofSchistosoma mansoni takes place in five steps which can be recognized under the microscope.

  1. 1.

    Flame beat in the protonephridia.

  2. 2.

    Contractions of the whole animal.

  3. 3.

Movement of the cilia at the front part of the miracidium.

  4. 4.

Movement of the cilia on the whole surface.

  5. 5.

Opening of the egg capsule and emerging of the miracidium.

Until the immediate start of the emerging process the inactivation can be brought about by putting the activated miracidium in a sodium chloride solution, which can have a concentration from 0,9% to 2,5%.

Mannitole solutions, which concerning their osmotic value equal the above mentioned sodium chloride solutions, show the same effect on the animal.

The same animal was activated up to three times and inactivated two times.

Activation and inactivation of the miracidium are experimentally caused by uptake and loss of water. Possible mechanisms of inactivation are discussed.

Wasserentzug. Mögliche Inaktivierungsmechanismen werden diskutiert.
