Abstract
An additional analysis of dynamic mechanical data previously reported for human cancellous bone is presented. This analysis indicates that preferential arrangements of the small numbers of Ca44 atoms (∼2%) within apatite structures of bone minerals may occur and have a disproportionate influence on the macroscopic response of bone to mechanical vibrations. Similar preferential or localised arrangements of particular atomic isotopes might have physiological as well as mechanical consequences in bone and other biomaterials.
Sommaire
