Abstract
In studying the dynamic effects of drugs on isolated tissue, a method is required in which different bathing solutions can be applied to the preparation in a controlled manner. Three specially designed pneumatically actuated control valves were incorporated into a superfusion system for switching between different perfusates. With this arrangement the solutions could be switched within 10 ms. Additional features of this system included a low flow rate to conserve the bathing solutions, a method of preventing fluid from becoming stagnant in the tubing, a means of controlling the temperature of the perfusate, and facilities for remote control of the switching from one solution to another. Although this system was designed specifically for the superfusion of isolated papillary muscle preparations, it is generally applicable to most isolated tissue preparations.
Sommaire
