Présentation des géomembranes

Résumé

Les applications des membranes d'étanchéité, de renforcement et de drainage ainsi que celles destinées à des structures gonflables, connaissent un développement extrêmement rapide grâce à la qualité des matériaux disponibles.

L'auteur tente de présenter dans ce rapport les variétés de ces matériaux en particulier destinés à l'étanchéité des grandes surfaces. La classification est basée sur la nature chimique des matériaux utilisés d'une part, et d'autre part sur leurs performances intrinsèques et fonctionnelles.

L'accent est mis sur le besoin impérieux d'unification des méthodes d'évaluation des performances indispensables pour l'auteur du projet, à savoir la résistance du matériau et des assemblages sous différentes sollicitations combinées ainsi que leur durabilité.

A cet égard, l'intérêt de l'étude d'une corrélation entre les essais accélérés et le comportementin situ à long terme des membranes doit être particulièrement soulevé.

La Commission Permanente de la RILEM, lors de sa dernière réunion tenue à Athènes en octobre 1978, a chargé l'auteur de cet article de la présidence de la Commission Technique vouée à l'étude des méthodes d'évaluation des performances des membranes de synthèse destinées à l'étanchéité, le renforcement, le drainage et les structures spatiales.

La Commission entreprendra ses travaux sous peu.

Summary

The practical use of geomembranes as well as geotextiles and pneumatic structures is developing extremely rapidly, thanks to the quality of available materials.

In this report the author endeavours to demonstrate the variety of these materials especially designed for waterproofing of large surfaces. The classification is based on one hand on the chemical nature of the materials used, and on the other on their intrinsic and functional behaviour.

Emphasis is laid on the pressing need to unify methods of evaluating peformance which are essential to the designer, that is to say the strength of the material and the connections under different combined stresses, also their durability.

The importance of research on the correlation between accelerated tests and thein situ long-term behaviour of membranes must be particularly underlined in this respect.

On the occasion of its latest meeting held in Athens in October 1978, the Permanent Committee of RILEM entrusted the author of this article with chairing the Technical Committee devoted to the study of methods for evaluating the performance of synthetic membranes used for waterproofing, reinforfement, drainage and space structures.

The Committee will start work in the near future.
