Summary
The measurement of the thermal conductivity of soils has a renewed value with projects for the storage and recuperation of energy in these media. In the context of the measurement of this parameter by cylindrical probe in transitory regime, we examinethe influence on measurement of the conditions of placing the probe in the soil.
The programme of experiments consisted of three series of tests:
-
- tests on liquids of known thermal conductivity, in order to calibrate the probe;
-
- tests on soil with variable water content, with the probe introduced before compaction;
-
- tests on the soil mentioned above, with introduction of the probe after compaction.
These tests make it possible to test by experiment the theoretical model of the method proposed by van der Held and van Drumen. We show, however, that the conrrection of time t 0 introduced by these authors makes it possible to take into account not only the finite length of the probe but also the contact resistance between the probe and the external medium, and the nature of the latter.
The correction of time t 0 makes it possible to overcome contact resistances and enables the measurement of the thermal conductivity of soils using various methods of introducing the probe:
-
- introduction of the probe before compaction in the case of soils reconstituted in the laboratory;
-
- introduction of the probe in the laboratory in nonremoulded soil samples extractedin situ;
-
- finally, forin situ tests, introduction of the probe at the required depth by core-boring or trench.
The method of measurement is then applied to the study of the variation of the thermal conductivity of a silt in function of the water content. We have found thatthe result is unaffected by the method of introducing the probe.
