Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

Abstract

High-strength heat-treatable alloy 01949 of the Al−Zn−Mg system is a material with combined strengthening. Use of the method of rapid crystallization in the production of cast preforms (granules, powders) has made it possible to introduce an elevated amount of refractory transition metals into the composition of alloy 01949. The strengthening effect in aging due to segregation of Zn−Mg phases is combined with strengthening due to formation of intermetallic compounds of the transition metals. The present paper is devoted to a study of the regular features in the changes in the structure and properties of granulated alloy 01949 in quenching and aging. Data on the aging kinetics are used to determine the temperature-and-time regions of zonal and phase aging. Optimum regimes for quenching and aging are suggested.
