Steel parts
Results of a study of the technical condition of worked-out parts (wheelpair axles, gears, etc.) of the subway rolling stock produced from steel are presented. The use of optical fractography, metallography, and traditional and novel methods of nondestructive control allowed the authors to determine the defects that appear in various stages of production, service, and repair of the parts and analyze the causes of crack formation and fracture, and in some cases to recommend effective measures for preventing the defects. The study was begun with nondestructive control of broken and newly produced parts, which was followed by the investigation of their appearance, fracture surfaces, and damaged or worn surfaces with the use of the results of chemical and metallographic analysis if required.
