Abstract
Using combination of hypothermia (4 degrees C), hyperbaria (3 ATA of pure oxygen) and initial perfusion with homologous plasma, canine kidneys were preserved for 24 to 48 hours and reimplanted as a cervical autograft. Contralateral nephrectomy was carried out 2 weeks to 4 months after reimplantation. Homologous plasma diluted twice with lactated Ringer’s solution was found to be the best perfusate so far examined. Using this perfusate, it was possible to keep the dog with reimplanted kidney after 24 hours preservation alive for two months after contralateral nephrectomy, and after 48 hours preservation one dog survived as long as three months. However, at the present stage of development of preservation technique 24 hour preservation seems to be of practical value.
