Conclusions

  1. 1.

The dependence of the thickness of the heated (hardened and/or melted) layer on steels and cast irons on the parameters of surface heating by a concentrated heating source is described by a single relationzP Fom, where the Fourier factor is defined approximately as Fo≈a/(d v) and the exponentm=0.5 or 0.4 for one-dimensional and three-dimensional problems, respectively.

  2. 2.

The dependencezP Fom has been proved experimentally for laser and plasma heating of various steels and cast irons.
