Abstract

The correlation between the composition and properties of gray cast iron and the behavior of its cooling curve in the hardening range has long been used by casting specialists for rapid control of the quality. The high reliability of such control indicates that the primary structure of the cast iron is responsible for the main qualitative characteristics of the casting. The parameters of the primary structure seem to determine the necessary and sufficient characteristics required for the development of an analytical model of the composition/structure/properties relationships. However, so far no standard has been developed for regulating the parameters of dendrite branches and cells of the eutectic in the structure of cast iron in metallographic analysis, and data on the level of the strength properties of these structural components are scarce, which hampers the creation of such a model. In this connection, it is of interest to determine the range of variation of the strength properties of dendrite crystals and eutectic cells and to refine the morphological parameters of these structural components, which determine the degree of their participation in the work of fracture in gray cast irons.
