Summary

The effect of beta irradiation on the corneal epithelium of the rat is investigated at intervals of 24 hours, 7 and 28 days after application of 600 rep, 2400 rep and 6000 rep using a 90-Sr-applicator (contact treatment). Changes of cell proliferation resulting from irradiation treatment are studied by autoradiographic determination of the labelling index using 3-H-thymidine and by determination of the mitotic index.

24 hours after irradiation there is at all dose rates an initial depression of the labelling index without a special relation to the radiation dose whereas the mitotic index shows a definite relation to the dose applicated: after 600 rep there is an increase, after 2400 rep no evident change, after 6000 rep a decrease of the mitotic index as compared with the controls.

7 and 28 days after treatment the labelling indices correspond with the control’s index whereas now the mitotic indices exceed those of the controls. In this period no special relation to the amount of irradiation can be determined.

The different effect on labelling index and mitotic index changing the quotient “labelling index/mitotic index” to an increase of the mitotic index may indicate a prolongation of the mitotic time.

After treatment with 2400 rep and 6000 rep the layers of the corneal epithelium are diminished possibly caused by a shortening of the life of the postmitotic cell.
