Summary
Spasm has been induced in baboons' larger cerebral arteries. Thereafter their reactivity to changes in PaCO2 has been measured by carefully controlled angiography.
The changes in calibre which have been observed are consistent with the idea that “spasm” is a state of altered reactivity which includes an increased sensitivity to the presumed sympathetic stimulus of rising PaCO2. This altered reactivity to PaCO2 changes may persist for at least a week.
