Abstract

Heavy mortality reaching almost 100% occurred in the larvae of the mangrove crab,Scylla serrata, from July to December 1997 at the hatchery of Gondol Research Station for Coastal Fisheries in Bali, Indonesia. Mortality was observed in larvae after hatching from the eggs. The affected larvae were whitish and filled with numerous aseptate hyphae. Three fungi belonging to the order Lagenidiales,Lagenidium callinectes, Haliphthoros milfordensis, andHalocrusticida sp., were isolated from the infected larvae. Pathogenicity tests of the infected fungi against the larvae of mangrove crab demonstrated that all isolates were pathogenic.
