Instabilities in Liquid crystals

Summary

Structural instabilities in liquid crystals were theoretically investigated by using nonlinear dynamics. After a general treatment some concrete examples are considered. In particular the Frederiks transition was taken into account. Then the instability of smectics A in a magnetic field parallel to smectic layers was treated. Finally other examples are mentioned.

Riassunto

Sono state studiate teoricamente instabilità strutturali nei cristalli liquidi usando la dinamica non lineare. Dopo una trattazione generale si considerano alcuni esempi concreti. In particolare si prende in considerazione la transizione di Frederiks. Si è quindi trattata l’instabilità dello smettico A in un campo magnetico parallelo a strati smettici. Infine si accenna ad altri esempi.

Используя нелинеьную динамику, теоретически исследуются структурные неустойчивости в жидких кристаллах. После общего рассмотрения анализируются конкретные примеры. В частности, рассматривается переход Фредерикса. Затем исследуется неустойчивость смектика-A в магнитном поле, параллельном смектическим слоям. В заключения, обсуждаются другие примеры.
