Survival of T4 bacteriophage irradiated in suspension by protons at energies between 4.6 and 2.5 MeV. Dependence on linear energy transfer

Summary

The mean survival doses of T4 bacteriophage irradiated in suspension by protons were measured at six values of incident energy. Due to the thickness of the target, the beam stopped inside the suspension, so yielding the overall mean dose, averaged from the incident energy to zero. By a suitable analysis of the overall mean doses, measured at different incident energies, the mean doses in narrow intervals of energy, which may be related to definite LET values, were extracted.

Si riportano le misure della dose media di sopravvivenza del batteriofago T4, irradiato in sospensione con protoni di diversa energia incidente. A causa dello spessore del bersaglio, il fascio si arrestava all'interno della sospensione fornendo così il valore globale della dose media tra il valore dell'energia incidente e zero. Con un'opportuna analisi dei valori globali della dose media, ottenuti a varie energie incidenti, è possibile calcolare le dose medie, in intervalli di energia sufficientemente stretti, da poter essere correlate a valori del trasferimento lineare di energia (LET).

Были измерены средние дозы выживаемости бактериофагов T4 при облучении в суспензии протонами при шести значениях начальной энергии. Учитывая толщину мишени, пучок останавливается внутри суспензии и дает полную среднюю дозу, усредненную по энергии от начальной до нулевой. Проводится соответствующий анализ полной средней дозы, измернной при различных начаьных энергиях, а также средней дозы в узком интервале энергии, которая может быть связана с определенными значениями линейной передачи энергии.
