Summary
The cornea of normotensive eyes was applanated at different degree by a pexiglass-sheet while optical sections through the anterior segment were photographed. The collected material permits the following statements:
The cornea flattens within the contact area. The surrounding cornea reimains unchanged.
Within the central section the anterior chamber's depth is decreasing with increase of applanation: This reduction of the anterior chamber corresponds exactly to the height of the applanated corneal segment.
The peripheral anterior chamber is getting deeper with increasing corneal applanation due to displacement of the peripheral iris towards the posterior chamber.
The width of the angle of the anterior chamber shows no change during applanation.
In aphakic eyes, during the applanation, the iris reimains in situ and the aqueous passes visibly through the pupil into the vitreous space pushing the anterior limiting membrene of the vitreous backward.
