Summary
To get a basis for studies on pathological function states of lacrimal glands in rabbits, alterations of metabolism of lacrimal glands were produced by ischemia. Levels of lactate, a-glycerophosphate and malate, and ratios of lactate/pyruvate (L/P) and ofα-glycerophosphate/dihy-droxyacetonphosphate (G/D) were investigated at different stages of ischemia.

1.
The levels of lactate,α-glycerophosphate and malate and the ratios of L/P and G/D rise in ischemia. is 25–30 times lower than in liver, and as high as in skeletal muscle. It is limited by the low enzyme activity of pyruvic kinase.
-
3.
The close correlation of L/P and G/D ratios indicates, that there is a unique glycolytic system in the cells of the lacrimal glands like in the liver. In the lacrimal gland an intracellular compartimentation of the glycolytic reactions as found in skeletal muscle can be excluded because of the close correlation between the redoxquotients.
