Summary
An analysis of oxygen consumption and glycolysis in the isolated rat retina shows a continuous increase from the 10th to 30th day. Similarly the activity of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and malic dehydrogenase is increased. On the other hand the cell concentration—as determined by DNA content-remains constant. These findings suggest a real increase of metabolic activity. The results are correlated to the morphological and functional differentiation of the retina during this period.
