Summary
In experiments the excised sphincter iridis relaxes under the effect of adrenaline and noradrenaline. This effect can be inhibited by dichloroisoproterenol which is a selectively blocking agent of the adrenergic beta-receptors of the muscle. This result indicates that the sphincter iridis has only inhititory beta-receptors. The minimal effective amount of the drug is 100 times more than the quantity of the administered adrenaline or noradrenaline.
The dichloroisoproterenol is strongly attached to the effectors and the drug also has a cumulative effect. The drug can not be dissolved by repeated washing of the excised muscle by Tyrode-solution.
The fact, that larger amount of adrenaline- or noradrenaline can be effective even after blocking of the receptors, suggests that the effect of the drug is a competitive one.
