Abstract
Abstract
Thin layers of TlCl, TlBr, and TlJ formed by evaporation on cleavage faces of alkali halides of the NaCl type, at room temperature, have been investigated by electron diffraction methods. They do not show the NaCl structure as it had been assumed previously, but the orthorhombic TlJ structure. Layers of TlCl and TlBr exceeding a certain thickness display the normal CsCl structure. These results show that not only TlJ, but also TlCl and TlBr can form crystals of the TlJ type. In very thin layers of the three thallium halides, the lengths of thea-andb-axes, which are parallel to the substrate face, mutually approach each other and may even become equal, depending on the nature of the substrate and the thickness of the deposit. The distance between the nearest ions of different sign, however, remains unchanged.
